Should high schools provide students with frequent learning opportunities away from school?

    2014年4月ACT写作参考范文:

Some educators oppose to the idea of providing students with frequent learning opportunities away from school, considering that limited school budgets should be allocated to academic facilities. However, never should high schools sacrifice students’ learning opportunities away from school for money; otherwise the considerable amount of merits of these opportunities will be sadly missed. Such learning forms present a way for students to approach knowledge in a completely new way, and give them a chance to experience hands-on learning and also to reinforce what have been taught in the classroom.

First of all, learning from outside of school can provide students with a more interesting environment to approach knowledge. Learning only in classroom can exhaust students easily and the boredom of the classroom may lead some kids to lose interest in a particular subject. This is especially true of difficult subjects, but it can happen with pretty much anything. Also, new environments can provide challenges that allow for more individual learning, while classroom teaching is often generalized and many times targeted to the slowest learners in the group. During field trips, kids have a chance to go the extra step and take on as much information as they want and can.

Secondly, extracurricular learning activities are an excellent way for students to learn through experience. Experts believe there are different methods of learning, including visual, auditory and tactile and most students will greatly benefit from learning in a tactile way, where the senses come into play a lot more than they would ever do in a classroom. Depending on the type of field trip, teachers can take advantage of this by allowing kids to not only observe but also to actively participate in the events going on around them. While tests and classroom education may not work so great for some kids, field trips put everybody at the same level, as the learning is experienced, rather than taught. Field trips can also be a great way to provide interaction among subjects. For example, a trip to a local nature center could be used to explore the flora and fauna, practice concepts learned in physics and mathematics, used to jump-start writing topics or made into a history and geography lesson.

Thirdly, learning outside of school can also facilitate student to reinforce what they have learnt at school. A field trip to a museum gallery or exhibit can not only give students something new to see but also reinforce concepts learned in the classroom. Learning about a scientific process, for instance, which is then illustrated in a display at a science museum, offers students a chance to see the science, which they have already had explained to them, in action. A field trip can also present students with a lot of information tied together neatly, making it easier for a teacher to explain a certain concept, situation or historical period.

In view of the financial cost some educators suggest to spend that money on academic resources, because it would surely cost a large amount of money for high schools to organize such learning activities. However, does this opposition hold water? Of course not. Whether it is academic resources or extracurricular learning opportunities, their ultimate purposes are the same, which is to cultivate qualified high school student both academically and non-academically. Too much extensive learning might backfire and high schools need these learning opportunities away from school to compensate for the disadvantages of in-class learning.

In conclusion, imposing excessive in-class learning on students can condemn students to boredom, and low learning efficiency. However, learning outside of class can provides students with a more intriguing and effective way of approaching knowledge, while helping students reinforce what have been taught at school. Therefore, high schools should be more generous with money and offer more learning opportunities away from school.
